“…warriors are peacemakers and peace bringers," ~ Edward Tick, PH.D,
Department of Defense’s
Institute of Integrative Health and Healing at Fort Bliss
The US military is using Reiki along with other holistic alternative and complementary therapies such as massage, acupuncture, meditation, qi gong and yoga for the treatment of PTSD at .  The Fort Bliss program was founded by Dr. John Fortunato and is currently under the direction of Dr. Vicki Thomas.  On July13, 2008, Army Chief of Staff, George Casey publicly announced that the Fort Bliss PTSD program should be replicated.  On January 21, 2010, Fort Bliss Commanding General,Maj. Gen. Howard B. Bromberg reported in the Fort Bliss Monitor that the Restoration and Resilience Program had graduated 66 participants since it opened its doors in 2007.

In 2011, Dr. Sara Gilliam lauded the R&R Center as a PTSD researcher’s dream.  The six-month program is unique in that it utilizes complementary alternative medicine modalities in addition to standard therapy. The CAM modalities include reiki, acupuncture, massage therapy, biofeedback, neuro-feedback, movement therapy, meditation and art therapy.

Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program
Darnall Army Medical Center Fort Hood
The Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program at Darnall Army Medical Center, Fort Hood, Texas  is committed to providing initial emotional relief for many returning soldiers to prepare them for full recovery.  Along with group and individual therapy, exercise, coping skills, self-regulation and biofeedback, the program includes Reiki, massage, acupuncture and yoga. COL C. J. Diebold, chief of psychiatry at Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii, and psychiatry consultant to The Surgeon General of the Army announced,  "I visited Fort Hood recently and was very impressed by the program there. They have started looking at certain symptoms of PTSD, and using alternative therapies."

"Innovative approaches include the Restoration and Resilience Center at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Fort Bliss, Texas; and the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program at Darnall Army Medical Center, Fort Hood, Texas.

Beaumont's R&R Center uses techniques such as group counseling, biofeedback and Reiki (and) massage to help Soldiers deal with post-traumatic stress disorder. It has graduated 80 Soldiers, with 64 percent being classified fit for duty."
From the May 2009 Mercury, an Army Medical Department publication

I encourage  service members who want to continue serving and those who have come home, to consider adding Reiki to their self care program.

I also applaud the Fort Bliss Restoration and Resilience Program and the Fort Hood Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program for many reasons.  This Fort Bliss Monitor article demonstrates just one of them:
Ilona Meagher, author, 2008 Illinois Journalist of the Year and devoted advocate for veterans has testified before Congress about the heartbreaking reality of PTSD.  She continues to raise awareness about suicide among military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.  We have provided a link for easy access to the interesting information she provides regarding Reiki and the use of Reiki for soldiers & their loved ones.
